"November Spawned A Monster"
(Morrissey/Clive Langer)

These words are transcribed without permission the way they appear in the "Bona Drag" album. There are no variations between the printed lyrics and what Morrissey actually sings in the studio version.

Sleep on and dream of Love
because it's the closest you will 1
get to love
poor twisted child
so ugly, so ugly 2
poor twisted child
oh hug me, oh hug me 3
one November
spawned a monster
in the shape of this child
who later cried:
"But Jesus made me, so 4
Jesus save me from
pity, sympathy
and people discussing me"
a frame of useless limbs
what can make GOOD
all the BAD that's been done?
And if the lights were out
could you even bear
to kiss her full on the mouth 5
(or anywhere?) 6
poor twisted child
so ugly, so ugly 2
poor twisted child
oh hug me, oh hug me 3
one November
spawned a monster
in the shape of this child
who must remain
a hostage to kindness
and the wheels underneath her
a hostage to kindness
and the wheels underneath her
a symbol of where mad, mad lovers 7
must PAUSE and draw the line
So sleep and dream of love
because it's the closest 1
you will get to love 8
that November 9
is a time 9
which I must 9
put OUT of my mind 9
oh one fine day
LET IT BE SOON
she won't be rich or beautiful 10
but she'll be walking your streets
in the clothes that she went out
and chose for herself 11

1 On the You Are The Quarry tour Morrissey often sang "sleep on and dream of love, why?, because it's the closest you will get to love". This can be heard on live album "Live At Earls Court".

2 On the Oye Esteban tour, the 2002 tour and the You Are The Quarry tour Morrissey sometimes changed this line to "You're just so ugly, you're so ugly". This can be heard on live album "Live At Earls Court". On select 2002 dates he sang "she's so ugly, she's so ugly" and sometimes "I'm so ugly".

3 On the Oye Esteban tour, the 2002 tour and the You Are The Quarry tour Morrissey sometimes changed this line to "Please hug me, oh hug me" or "Oh hug me, please hug me" or "Please hug me, please hug me". This can be heard on live album "Live At Earls Court",

4 On the You Are The Quarry tour Morrissey started by changing this line to "...idiots discussing me". Then further into the tour he extended this to: "But Jesus made me, so he should save me from pity, sympathy and idiots discussing me, yes I am a freak and nothing can make good of the bad that's been done". This can be heard on live album "Live At Earls Court". The "yes I am a freak" change was done once in 2000, but it took a few years for Morrissey to use it regularly.

5 Now and then throughout this song's extensive live life Morrissey changed this line to "could you even bear to kiss me full on the mouth or anywhere".

6 Now and then when doing this song live, as heard on both live albums "Beethoven Was Deaf" and "Live At Earls Court", Morrissey goes "No, no, no, no, no, no, no".

7 On one or very few occasions on the Kill Uncle tour Morrissey changed this line and the following one to "a symbol of where of all mad lovers must always draw the line". A few times in 1992 and often in 1999/2000 he sang the latter or "A symbol of where mad mad lovers must always draw the line". The change to 'always' became standard halfway into the 2004 tour, as heard on live album "Live At Earls Court" when Morrissey changed this line and the following to "I am a symbol of where sex-mad lovers must always draw the line". On the 2000 half of the Oye Esteban tour, on the 2002 tour and sometimes on the 2004 You Are The Quarry tour the line was followed by something like "No thank you, no, no, no..."

8 For a short period on the American leg of the You Are The Quarry tour Morrissey extended this line to "because it's the closest you will get to love and I should know, I should know".

9 Morrissey didn't sing these lines in the live version heard on live album "Beethoven Was Deaf".

10 At the latter end of the You Are The Quarry tour Morrissey always changed this line to "She'll never be rich or beautiful". This can be heard on live album "Live At Earls Court".

11 Now and then throughout this song's extensive live history, Morrissey changed this line to "in the clothes that she went out and stole for herself". This change was a standard one on the late 1999 and 2000 dates of the Oye Esteban tour, except in Latin America where the change was only done about half the time because Morrissey was more conservative with lyric changes in that part of the world. The change was never done in 2002 or 2004.
