"I've Changed My Plea To Guilty"
(Morrissey/Mark E. Nevin)

These words are transcribed without permission the way they appear in the "My Early Burglary Years" album. Additions to the printed lyrics are in darker text while omissions are striken out.

I'm standing in the dock
With my innocent hand on my heart
I've changed my plea
I've changed my plea to guilty
because freedom is wasted on me
see how your rules spoil the game
outside there is a pain
emotional air raids exhausted my heart
and it's safer to stay be inside 1
so, I'm changing my plea
and no-one can dissuade me
because freedom is wasted on me
see how your rules spoil the game
Something I have learned
If there is one thing in life I've observed
It's that everybody's got somebody
but oh no, not me
so I've changed my plea to guilty
and reason and freedom are is a waste
It's a lot like life

1 In 1991 live performances of this song Morrissey often sang "it's safer to stay inside", which is closer to how the song was written, but not recorded. When the song was included in Morrissey's setlist again at the end of 2006 and in 2007, the change became standard.
