The Smiths' debut album was in its first week on the market, shows were sold-out and concert attendees very enthusiast. Simon Scott in Melody Maker wrote: "next stop, the world".

After someone managed to climb on stage and throw himself back into the crowd, Morrissey commented: "He's a clever bastard...".
