Fan Ian Simpkins reports that the Smiths played Portsmouth Polytechnic's Student Union on this date, and were supported by local band the Telephone Boxes. The venue was very small and crowded, and the show a very sweaty one. There was a rumour that the band had tried to get out of the gig as "This Charming Man" was out and they were about to hit the big time and therefore didn't want to play little unions any more.

There are no recordings of this concert in circulation at this point in time.
