"November Spawned A Monster"
collectors appendix

UK 7" [HMV POP1623]
The UK 7" comes in a rigid glossy sleeve opening from the side, with a semi-circle cut-out portion on the back for better grip on the record (view front and back artwork from the menu on the left). The record has a solid centre and vintage pink His Master's Voice labels with black text and logos. A His Masters Voice logo is found at the top, publishing and label credits on the left, "45 R.P.M." graphics, catalogue number and production credits on the right, and title at the bottom.

UK 12" [HMV 12POP1623]
The front artwork of the 12" format is very slightly different to that of the 7", mainly in the position of the text (see left). The back is almost the same, it differs only in the catalogue number and the relative size of the text (see left). The record is slipped inside a black poly-lined paper inner bag. It has pink vintage His Master's Voice labels with black text: His Masters Voice logo at the top; publishing info and catalogue number on the left; "45 R.P.M." graphics, catalogue number and label credits on the right; titles, songwriting and production credits at the bottom.

UK CD5 [HMV CDPOP1623]
The cd-single comes in a thin jewel case. The front artwork shows a different cropping of the usual Morrissey image than on the front of the vinyl formats (view left). The spine is brown with Morrissey's name, "November Spawned A Monster" and the catalogue number in pale greyish brown or pink, depending on how much the spine was exposed to light. The back flap is also brown, it features the UK and Euro catalogue numbers in pink, the barcode in a white box, Morrissey's name in the same font as on the front but pale pink, and a pink His Master's Voice logo. The insert's reverse shows a cropped version of the artwork found on the back of the 7" and 12" sleeves, with His Master's Voice logo, track listing and full credits printed over the bottom half (see left). The disc is metallic pink with black text and made to look like the labels of the vinyl formats: a His Masters Voice logo at the top; publishing info and label credits on the left; "CD" graphics in the style of the vinyl's "45 RPM", catalogue numbers and production credits on the right; titles and songwriting credits at the bottom, legal warning around the edge.

UK CSS [HMV TCPOP1623]
The cassingle was distributed in a card slipcase. The front and back show vertically cropped versions of the usual front and back artwork (view both left). Over the back image are printed the track listing and full credits, with the His Master's Voice logo and catalogue number in the top left corner. The spines are brown with pinkish grey text: catalogue number and Dolby logo at the top, His Master's Voice logo at the bottom, Morrissey's name (in the same font as on the front) and "November Spawned A Monster" in the middle. The cassette itself is made of clear plastic with pale grey text printed directly onto it. It features a His Master's Voice logo in the top right corner.

UK 7" jukebox [HMV POP1623]
This item is just like the stock 7" described above but at the centre is a large hole for jukebox play. The record has been reported to be found inside a picture sleeve although this pairing may have taken place a posteriori.

UK 12" promo [HMV 12POPDJ1623]
Each one of Morrissey's first six solo singles was promoted with the help of a 12" in a glossy record bag, each title of a different colour. The sleeve for the promo 12" of single #6, "November Spawned A Monster", is brown (view left). It has Morrissey's name at the top in white, in the same font used on the commercial single. Below his name is a white His Master's Voice logo. One side is die-cut to expose the a-side label. The other side is all brown with no text, just a cut-out opening at the top to facilitate access to the record. The labels are white with a grey 'A' or 'B' taking up the whole space. Each side's track listing and the promo's catalogue number are printed in the lower half in a smaller black font.

UK 7" promo [HMV POP1623]
Promotion of this single was also done via stock copies of the 7" format sent to media or retail with a Capitol Parlophone plugger sticker on the sleeve. At least two different variations have been spotted. In one case the sticker is from Helene Pennant Jones Promotions and found on the front of the sleeve (dated ??). In the other case the sticker is from Lynn Evans Promotions, dated "23 APR 1990", and found on the back of the sleeve.

UK video promo [Chop Em Out]
The one-track promo video sent to media ahead of the release of this single comes in a black hardshell case with paper insert in the display window. This generic insert is white with grey text. Its front shows a Chop Em Out Optimedia logo at the top and contact info at the bottom. The following information was printed in the middle section on the front as well as on the sticker label on the top of the videocassette: "Morrissey", "November Spawned A Monster", "(EMI?) Records", (date?). A white Capitol Parlophone sticker on the spine gives release information and perhaps plugger contact info (confirmation needed). Some copies have a white sticker on the front with plugger Miranda Leckie's contact information and the stamped date "23(?) APR 1990".

(Image needed). The "November Spawned A Monster" promo poster shows the background image from this single's artwork (Morrissey in denim jacket, back turned), with "Morrissey" at the top in the same font as on the single but black, "November Spawned A Monster" in the same font and colour over the bottom half of the image, and a small black His Master's Voice logo at the bottom.

UK 7" test pressing [HMV POP1623]
The test pressing for the 7" has pale blue paper labels. The a-side label has "POP 1623 A/B-1U" in handwriting and is date-stamped "17 JAN 1990". The record comes in a black die-cut paper record bag.

UK 12" test pressing [HMV 12POP1623]
The test pressing for the 12" has very pale blue paper labels. The disc has no writing on the labels. The record comes in a white die-cut paper record bag with the "A" side title, catalogue and matrix number written in biro pen and is date-stamped "17 JAN 1990". Copies in stock sleeves have been seen on the collectors market.

UK 12" test pressing "November The Second" [HMV 12POPXDJ1623]
Perhaps the most exciting item on this page is the extremely rare test pressing for "November The Second", the planned then cancelled remix 12" of "November Spawned A Monster". The record is one-sided and has beige labels with nothing printed or written on them. It comes in a plain white paper record bag of the same type often used in England as inner sleeves. The matrix number 12POPXDJ1623A-1U and release identification are handwritten on the paper bag, alongside the date-stamp "2 MAR 1990".
12 POPXDJ 1623 A-1U-1-1 TERRACE STOMP / LP FB 12            6

UK 10" acetate for 7" [CBS Studios]
This is a one-sided cellulose lacquer acetate for the 7", set inside a 10" surround. It has a CBS Studios label on side A with logo and address at the top. The leftover space was filled in handwriting with the following information: "A", "Morrissey", "14/11/89" (?), "November Spawned A Monster 5:24". The b-side has no label because there is no music on that side. This acetate has been seen in a generic brown die-cut card sleeve.

UK 12" acetate [CBS Studios]
The 12" acetate has music on both sides. Its labels have a blue CBS Studios logo and contact information at the top. The leftover space beneath that was filled in handwriting with the following information: the side letter, "Morrissey", (a date?) and that side's track listing including song length. The acetate is circulated in a plain white card sleeve.

UK 12" acetate "November The Second" [CBS Studios]
This is very similar to its standard counterpart listed above. It also bears generic CBS Studios labels with blue CBS Studios logo and contact information at the top. The handwritten text in this case is Morrissey's name in the top half, the date "26/1/90" top right, and "November Spawned A Monster - remix" in the bottom half. The acetate comes in a white anti-static inner sleeve slipped inside a generic white card sleeve with the same information plus the song length "5:23" handwritten on its front. The acetate features one and a half song by some unidentified soul singer (Sade-style) on the reverse. The acetate's reverse lacks a label and the reverse of the sleeve is all blank.

Canada 12" [Sire/Reprise 92 15290]
Just like its American counterpart, the Canadian 12" shows a slight variation on the usual 12" artwork on the front (view left). The back of the sleeve is modelled on the back of the regular UK 12", but there are no barcode, catalogue number or logo in the top right corner. Instead, the main credits were moved up to make space for the Canadian barcode, Sire and Reprise logos, and WEA Canada credits at the bottom. Copies that are still sealed have an orange rectangle sticker on the front stating "Specially-Priced Maxi-Single", advertising the musical content and, for some unknown reason, giving two different catalogue numbers. The record is slipped inside a clear anti-static inner sleeve. The labels are the usual yellow Sire ones, with blue Sire logo at the top, black Reprise logo and catalogue number on the left, contents and credits at the bottom, the RPM on the right, and Sire/WEA Canada credits around the bottom edge.

Canada CMS [Sire/Reprise 92 15294]
The Canadian cassette was modelled after its American counterpart. The front artwork is therefore almost the same as that of the UK cassette, but the layout of Morrissey's name is slightly different (view left). The spine and back are brown with pink text. The spine has the catalogue number at the top and a CMS logo at the bottom. Morrissey's name is printed there in the same font as on the front. The back features the cassette's track listing and some credits, but instead of the Sire address and the mention of the availability on compact disc, this edition has a legal warning and the address for Warner Canada. The reverse of the insert is mostly white, it shows only Sire and Reprise logos and credits as well as Dolby technology information behind the back flap. The cassette itself is made of black plastic with grey text printed directly onto it. The text content and layout is basically the same as on the USA cassette (track listing at the top, Sire and Reprise logos and the catalogue number on the left, etc), but the font and size are different and the catalogue number and credits reflect the fact that this is from Canada. Copies that are still sealed may have an orange rectangular sticker on the front stating "Specially Priced Cassette Maxi-Single" and advertising the musical content (confirmation needed).

EEC 7" [EMI 006 20 3734 7]
A 7" edition was made in the EEC for the German, Dutch and French markets, and also perhaps those of Scandinavia and other smaller countries of central Europe. The sleeve is made of slightly glossy paper and opens from the top. The front shows the expected 7" variation of the artwork (view left). The back is relatively different to the back of the UK 7". It shows the same image of Morrissey with back turned, and there's a barcode with a His Master's Voice logo in the top right corner, but the text was all changed. The catalogue number as well as those of the 12" and cd-single, a EMI credit and a label code were added beneath the barcode. The track listing for both sides is found in the bottom half, including song lengths, songwriting and production credits. A EMI logo is found in the bottom right corner. The record has a large hole at its centre. Instead of replicating the pink labels of the UK, EMI stuck to the blue ones with black text used on earlier European Morrissey singles. A His Master's Voice logo is found at the top, "45 RPM" on the right, and a GEMA box with Stemra underneath on the left, above the European catalogue number. The titles and songwriting credits are in the bottom half. Legal credits in English and in German, ending with "Made In EEC", are printed along the outer edge.

EEC 12" [EMI 060 20 3734 6]
The front of the EEC 12" shows the usual 12" artwork (view left). The differences between its back and that of its UK counterpart parallel those described for the EEC 7". It shows the same image of Morrissey with back turned, and there's a barcode with a His Master's Voice logo in the top right corner, but the text was all changed. The catalogue number as well as those of the 7" and cd-single, a EMI credit and a label code were added beneath the barcode. The track listing for both sides is found in the bottom half, including song lengths, songwriting and production credits. A EMI logo is found in the bottom right corner. The record is slipped inside a white paper inner sleeve. Although the UK labels are pink with black text, the labels here are blue with black text just like those of the earlier Morrissey 12" singles in continental Europe. A His Master's Voice logo is found at the top, "45 RPM" on the right, and a GEMA box with Stemra underneath on the left, above the European catalogue number. The titles and writing credits are in the bottom half. Legal credits in English and German ending with "Made In EEC" are printed along the outer edge.

EEC 7" test pressing [EMI 20 3734 7]
The discovery of this test pressing for the EEC 7" tells us that it was pressed in Germany. The record has generic white labels with black printed text: "Unverkauflich Musterplatte" on the left, the side identification on the right and legal credits around the bottom edge. The catalogue number was stamped in blue in the bottom half (confirmation needed). The record usually comes inside a paper sleeve that is mostly white, with only the line "Muster zu Ihrer Information" repeated at the top in black. The back of the sleeve is all white. The record or sleeve are dated "2 FEB 1990". Precisions and any additional information needed.

Germany CD5 [EMI CDP 560 20 3734 2]
The German cd-single is the cd counterpart to the EEC vinyl described above. It comes in a slimline jewel case just like the UK cd-single. The front artwork is basically the same as on the latter item, but "November Spawned A Monster" was added in an unrelated black font above Morrissey's name (view left). The spine and back are off-white with very dark brown text. The spine gives the expected release information: Morrissey's name, title, catalogue number. The back flap features the track listing, the barcode and a His Master's Voice logo. The insert's inner panel is just like in the UK, but the catalogue number in the top right corner was replaced with the German cd's catalogue number as well as those for the two EEC vinyl formats, a EMI credit and a label code. A EMI logo was also added in the bottom left corner. The disc is orange with black text. Just like the UK disc it features a His Master's Voice logo at the top and 'CD' at the upper right (mocking the '45 RPM' vinyl labels), but the rest of the contents are different. The track listing is given to the right, Morrissey's name in a big font at the bottom, and logos, catalogue number and many credits to the left.

Germany various artists promo CD [EMI CDP519006]
The release of this single was promoted in Germany with the inclusion of the title track on the "Hot Shots Nr 2 - Berlin Special" compilation cd. This promo cd in regular jewel case features blue and silver artwork with "Hot Shots" in mock-high-relief, a red EMI Germany logo at the top and "for promotion only" in white at the bottom. Additional packaging information needed. Other artists featured on this compilation include Marillion, Corey Hart, Whitesnake, Marc Almond, etc

Italy 7" [EMI Italiana 06 203734 7]
The Italian 7" comes in a paper sleeve with a rough texture and opens from the top. It features the usual 7" artwork on the front. The back of the sleeve differs only slightly from its UK counterpart: the catalogue number in the top right corner was changed for the Italian one, the manufacturing credit at the bottom was removed and an EMI Italiana credit was added beneath the EMI credit. The record has a large hole at its centre. The labels are blue with black text just like those of the EEC 7" instead of being pink like the UK labels. The differences with the EEC labels are very minor ones: the GEMA/Stemra box was replaced with their Italian counterpart SIAE, the catalogue number was changed, an EMI Italiana credit is found around the outer edge, etc. The layout of the rest of the credits was slightly changed.

Italy 12" [EMI Italiana 14 203734 6]
The sleeve of the Italian 12" is made of particularly thin card and opens at the top. It shows the usual 12" variation of the artwork on the front. The back shows only very subtle differences with the back of the UK 12": the catalogue number beneath the barcode was changed for the Italian one, the manufacturing credit at the bottom was removed and an EMI Italiana credit was added underneath the EMI credit. Because of the sleeve in which this record was distributed, there is no inner sleeve, although many collectors have since added one for safer storage. The labels are blue with black text just like those of the EEC 12" instead of being pink like the UK labels. The differences with the EEC labels are very minor ones: the GEMA/Stemra box was replaced with their Italian counterpart SIAE, the catalogue number was changed, an EMI Italiana credit is found around the outer edge, etc. The layout of the rest of the credits was slightly changed.

Italy 7" promo [EMI Italiana 20 3734 7]

Japan CD5 [Toshiba EMI TOCP-6146]
The Japanese cd-single comes in a standard jewel case with transparent tray and no back insert, so the disc is visible from the back. It features its own unique variation on the usual artwork on the front (view left), with a slightly different text layout and the addition of the catalogue number in a very small orange font in the top left corner (behind the obi). The front and spine of the obi are brown with a mix of orange, pink and white text. Its reverse is brown and filled with white text, including a track listing in Japanese at the top, a purple Union Jack and a barcode amongst many other things. The booklet has 8 pages: one featuring the track listing and credits, four featuring what appears to be a biography, and three pages of lyrics in English and Japanese. The reverse of the booklet was modelled on the reverse of the UK cd insert, without the catalogue number in the top right corner but with additional EMI logo and credits at the bottom. The disc was also modelled closely on its UK counterpart. It is also metallic pink with black text, but the His Master's Voice logo at the top was changed for an EMI one, the catalogue number was changed for the Japanese one, the publishing rights were changed from BIEM/MCPS to Jasrac, the line "Made in UK" at the bottom was dropped and the legal line around the edge was adapted to Toshiba EMI.

Japan CD5 promo [Toshiba EMI TOCP-6146]
Promo cds are stock ones with a white and red promo sticker in the top right corner on the front insert. The disc's inner ring is marked with the words "SAMPLE NOT FOR SALE" in red.

Japan various artists promo CD [Toshiba EMI SPCD-1120]
The release of this single in Japan was also promoted with the inclusion of the title track on a various artists promo 18-track compilation titled "?? ?? UK". The front artwork shows a Union Jack and the covers of 10 albums or singles being promoted via this release, including the artwork to Morrissey's "November Spawned A Monster" single. "Special DJ Copy" is printed beneath the title, "Toshiba EMI" at the bottom and the catalogue number in the top right corner. Information on the rest of the packaging is needed. Morrissey's "Ouija Board, Ouija Board" single is also being promoted via the inclusion of its title track. Other artists featured include Marc Almond, Sinead O'Connor, Tears For Fears, etc.

Portugal 7" [EMI 20 3734 7]
The sleeve of the Portuguese 7" is made of paper and opens from the top. It has a rectangular cut-out at the back to facilitate access to the record. It features a very slight variation on the usual 7" artwork on the front (view left). The back differs from the back of the UK 7" by a few minor details: the catalogue number beneath the barcode was changed for the Portuguese one, a Valentim De Carvalho logo and manufacturing credit was added at the bottom, the EMI credit at the very bottom is printed in a smaller font, and a small printer credit was added sideways in the bottom left corner. The labels were modelled on the blue and black EEC ones instead of the pink UK ones, but the record has a solid centre. They also show a His Master's Voice logo at the top and "45 RPM" on the right, but feature fewer credits and Morrissey's name was given more emphasis than the song titles. The credits around the edge are in Portuguese.

USA CD5 [Sire/Reprise 9 21529-2]
The American cd-single features its own unique variation on the front artwork, with a slightly different positioning of Morrissey's name and the additional catalogue number in a small white font in the top right corner (view left). The insert is a simple paper square with nothing but white on the reverse. The spines are brown with release information in pink. The back features a cropping of the usual back artwork, with track listing, full credits, and Sire and Reprise logos and credits. A barcode is found in the top right corner (view left). The disc is silver with black text: Morrissey's name at the top, Sire/Reprise/Warner credits on the left, track listing on the right, production credits, label logos and catalogue number at the bottom. Copies that are still sealed are expected to have an orange rectangular sticker on the front stating "Compact Disc Maxi-Single" and advertising the musical content (confirmation needed).

USA 12" [Sire/Reprise 9 21529-0]
The American 12" shows a slight variation on the usual 12" artwork on the front (view left). The back of the sleeve is modelled on the back of the regular UK 12", but there are no barcode, catalogue number or logo in the top right corner. Instead, the main credits were moved up to make space for the American barcode, Sire and Reprise logos and credits at the bottom. Copies that are still sealed have an orange rectangular sticker on the front stating "Specially-Priced Maxi-Single", advertising the musical content. The record is slipped inside a clear anti-static inner sleeve. The labels are the usual yellow Sire ones, with blue Sire logo at the top, black Reprise logo and catalogue number on the left, contents and credits at the bottom, and RPM on the right.

USA CMS [Sire/Reprise 9 21529-4]
The front artwork of the American cassette single is almost the same as that of its UK counterpart, but the layout of Morrissey's name is slightly different (view left). The spine and back are brown with pink text. The spine has the catalogue number at the top and a CMS logo at the bottom. Morrissey's name is printed between that in the same font as on the front. The back features the cassette's track listing, some credits, a Sire address and the barcode. The reverse of the insert is mostly white, it shows only Sire and Reprise logos and credits as well as Dolby technology information behind the back flap. The cassette itself is made of white plastic with black text printed onto it. The track listing including song lengths is at the top and Sire and Reprise logos and the catalogue number are on the left. Copies that are still sealed have an orange rectangular sticker on the front stating "Specially Priced Cassette Maxi-Single" and advertising the musical content.

USA 12" promo [Sire/Reprise 9 21529-0]

The orange rectangular sticker advertising the single's contents which is usually found on the seal of the stock 12" was affixed directly onto the sleeve of the promo because promos were never sealed.
